This Italian bread derives its name from the Roman ‘panis focacius’, which means ‘hearth bread’. This is because focaccia was traditionally baked over coals in Roman times, using only a few ingredients, for basic sustenance. Today, focaccia has transcended boundaries — so much so that it’s now enjoyed in cafés and restaurants the world over. Our toasted Italian focaccia recipe is easy to follow. Eat it as is or relish it with some hot soup or a bowl of fresh salad.
